Four Dutch (Co-)Productions in International Competition

In the International Competition for Short Films are four Dutch (co-)productions: Pilar*, Easter Eggs*, The 2 Shoes and JabberwockyPilar is directed by Diana van Houten, J.J. Epping and Yngwie Boley and produced by il Luster Films. Sales is handled by SND Films. The short had its world premiere at TIFF 2020 in the Short Cuts section and many festival selections followed, including International Nashville Film Festival, Fantastic Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Imagine Film Festival and Florida Animation Festival, where it won Best Traditional Animation Film Award. In this hand-painted animation a post-apocalyptic desolate village is slowly being re-claimed by nature. Pilar and her only companion Baldr have barricaded themselves from the outside world, keeping out an unknown threat. Pilar feels trapped in their safe haven and longs to explore the mysterious and dan-gerous wilderness, though she feels unsure on how to act on this desire.

Easter Eggs by Nicolas Keppens and co-producer Ka-Ching Cartoons add another festival selection to their collection, which include selections for Nashville Film Festival, Brussels Short Film Festival, Indielisboa and Annecy. Plus, recently the short was selected as one of the 5 films nominated for the European Film Awards. Festival distribution is handled by Miyu. In Easter Eggs two teenagers are looking for something extraordinary in an ordinary village. They try to catch an exotic bird that escaped from a Chinese restaurant.

The 2 Shoes by Paul Driessen is co-produced by Anikey Studios. Festival distribution is also handled by Miyu. Earlier festival selections include Ottawa International Animation Festival and Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia. In this animated short, a child, a young man, an adult, and an old man walk alternately to doom, finding two shiny shoes on their way.

Jabberwocky by Sjaak Rood was commissioned by TED-Ed. It was selected for Kaboom Animation Festival, where it won the Award for Best Commissioned Film. As Alice wanders through the dreamscape of Looking-Glass Land in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There," she happens across a book written in an unintelligible language.
