Over the past thousand years the phenomenon of the 'Hollandse Nieuwe' (the New Dutch Herring) has become a national cultural icon. This documentary is told from the herring fishers' perspective in which the romance, the comradeship and herring itself are celebrated, but the film also chronicles the erosion and decline of one of the final remaining Dutch Glories.
