Homage Petra Lataster-Czisch and Peter Lataster 2024
With five joint films and a master class, the homage of the 39th DOK.fest München is dedicated to the Dutch directing duo Petra Lataster-Czisch and Peter Lataster. Petra Lataster-Czisch was born in the GDR (Dessau). She works as a screenwriter and director. Peter Lataster was born in the Netherlands and works as a cameraman. Together they have formed a film team since 1989 and founded their own production company, Lataster Films, in 2001. The linchpin of their films is their sensitive approach to their protagonists.

As part of the homage, a masterclass with Petra Lataster-Czisch and Peter Lataster will be held on Sunday 5 May. The following films are being shown within the programme:

  • Tales of a River / Prod. Zig Zag Film, HUMAN / 1994 / A laconic homage to Dessau and its history.
  • If We Knew / Prod. Marty de Jong / 2007 / Gently explores this concept of a “good life” at the Groningen University neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Not Without You / Prod. Lataster&Films / 2010 / What do you do when everything seems futile and there is no stopping a person’s physical and mental decline?
  • Jeroen, Jeroen / Prod. IDTV Docs / 2011 / A tribute to those who, with great commitment and dedication, provide help and guidance to people who are unable to stand on their own two feet.
  • Miss Kiet's Children** / Prod. Lataster&Films / 2016 / Immigrant children have to find their way in a new classroom, with a new teacher and a language they don't understand. An ode to the teacher every child deserves.

Part of the DOK.education section is Huibert van Wijk's short documentary Safiya - The Movie, produced by Cerutti Film. In the film eleven-year-old Safiya's parents split up when she was young. Will she eventually manage to give both her father figures a place in her heart?

This is My Moment* by Lieven Corthouts is selected for the African Encounters section. Cycling fans are elated when Biniam Girmay becomes the first cyclist from an African country to win a stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2022. The film accompanies Girmay over two years on his difficult path through this still deeply European sport. It is minority co-produced by Een van de jongens.
