The 15th edition of DOC NYC is set to take place, showcasing a rich selection of documentary films from around the globe. Let's have a look at the Dutch productions that will be prominently featured.
Still: Front Row - Miriam Guttmann
Directed by Miriam Guttmann and produced by Scenery, Front Row**will celebrate its world premiere at DOC NYC. This feature documentary is part of the Come as You Are section and boasts executive production from none other than Sarah Jessica Parker. The film follows leading ballet dancer Alex, who goes into exile to escape the war, and soldier Oleksandr, who loses both his legs in combat. They form an unlikely friendship.
In the Short List: Features section, viewers can catch Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat*, directed by Johan Grimonprez. Jazz and decolonization are entwined in this historical rollercoaster, co-produced by BALDR Film, that rewrites the Cold War episode that led musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach to crash the UN Security Council in protest against the murder of Patrice Lumumba.
Also featured in the Come as You Are section, The Fabulous Gold Harvesting Machine is directed by Alfredo Pourailly De La Plaza and is a Dutch minority co-production by Windmill. A father and a son give each other the support they can't get from the rest of society int his character driven documentary film, set in Chile.
Lastly, the short documentary The Story of Ne Kuko, directed by Festus Toll and produced by DOXY FIXY, will have its US premiere as part of the Shorts Programs. This film is an exploration of the disruption caused by colonial looting of art.
