Dutch (co-)productions shortlisted for the Oscars

Wander to Wonder and I'm Not a Robot among shortlisted films

Two Dutch short films have been shortlisted for the Oscars. Wander to Wonder by Nina Gantz is one of the 15 films shortlisted in the Animated Short Film category and I’m Not a Robot by Victoria Warmerdam is shortlisted in the Live Action Short category.

Nina Gantz’ anarchic stop motion animation Wander to Wonder (prod. Circe Films and Kaap Holland Film) about three tiny humans who star in a kids’  TV series called “Wander to Wonder”. After the creator dies, they are left alone in the studio. Struggling to find enough to eat, they continue to make increasingly strange episodes for their fans. It world premiered in Venice and recently won Best Short at the British Independent Awards and was nominated for the European Film Awards. With selections for over 140 festivals and winning 43 awards at international festivals, awards including SXSW, Animation Is Film Festival, Tampere Film Festival and Anima Brussels. I'm Not A Robot (prod. OAK Motion Pictures) tells the story of feminist Lara who, after several unsuccessful attempts to complete a Captcha, sets out to answer the disturbing question of whether she's a robot. With over 170 festival selections to date, the short film qualified no less then four times for submitting to the Oscar through selections and wins at Sitges Film Festival, Bengaluru International Short Film Festival, San Jose International Short Film Festival and Manhattan Short Film Festival. Recently Victoria Warmerdam’s short has been acquired by The New Yorker for their online screening room. Plus she and producer OAK Motion Pictures are working on a feature length adaptation alongside US production company Rearview Pictures

Next to these Dutch shorts several (minority) Dutch co-productions have also made it to the shortlists.Beautiful Men, (NL Co-Prod. Ka-Ching Cartoons) is shortlisted for Animated Short Film, Armand (NL Co-Prod. Keplerfilm) is shortlisted for International Feature and Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat (NL Co-Prod. BALDR) for Documentary Feature.  

The nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025, and the 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 2.
