The delivery of cargo along the Maroni River dividing Suriname and French Guyana reveals the complex dynamics of preserving traditions in the face of goldmining interests and climate change.
A boatman delivers cargo to remote Indigenous and Maroon communities between Suriname and French Guyana. The journey reveals the threats of goldmining and climate change to the region, and the complex dynamics of preserving local traditions in the face of the money-making interests within the rainforest. The film’s cinematic form is inspired by the mato, a Maroon story-telling technique, in which the narrator is interrupted by others, adding their own stories and songs.
